What kind of vehicle is the 2025 Rivian R1T? What does it compare to?
The 2025 Rivian R1T electric pickup truck comes up shorter in length than the Ford F-150 but stretches wider than the Ford Ranger. It competes with other electric utility vehicles ranging from the GMC Hummer EV to the Tesla Cybertruck.
Is the 2025 Rivian R1T a good truck?
It’s our highest rated pickup truck for good reason. It embodies classic pickup truck style in a modern EV package, accelerates like a supercar, off-roads like a Wrangler Rubicon, and costs less than most other luxury EV trucks. It earns a TCC Rating of 8.8 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2025 Rivian R1T?
The updates to the R1T pickup and related R1S three-row SUV are significant enough for Rivian to call it a second generation, even though the duo launched new in 2022. Most of the changes happen under the muscular sheet metal and behind its signature oval eyes in the name of efficiency. The number of electronic control modules drops from 17 to seven, enabling Rivian to trim 1.6 miles of wiring. New 22-inch wheels with aero covers and tires that reduce drag cost $2,000 extra but can boost range by nearly 5%.
Three battery pack sizes now unlock three motor configurations built in-house at Rivian. Every model has all-wheel drive, adaptive dampers, and air springs. The base Dual Standard is straightforward enough, with a 92.5-kwh battery pack, up to 270 miles of range, and a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. The Dual Large has a 109.4-kwh pack and range of up to 370 miles, or there’s a Dual Max with a 141.5-kwh pack and a 420-mile range. A Performance upgrade shaves the 0-60 mph time to 3.4 seconds. It induces a gasp, with up to 829 lb-ft torque unleashed at an instant. Woof indeed. Then there’s the three-motor Tri model powered by the Max pack and hitting the 0-60 mph benchmark in 2.9 seconds. A forthcoming Quad model promises to do it even quicker.
With adaptive damping, a hydraulic anti-roll system, and an air suspension with 6.5 inches of variance, the R1T hunkers down on the road to drive with either surprising alacrity or welcoming comfort that are both unusual for pickup trucks. With a ground clearance rising to nearly 15 inches and deep water fording capability, the R1T could follow a Wrangler Rubicon most anywhere and has the advantage of no differential case hanging down at the axle. It can also tow up to 11,000 pounds, and, yes, that eats into range by nearly 45%. At about 7,000 pounds, it has some off-road limitations due sheerly to its weight.
A large touchscreen and woodgrain trim grace the interior, and the cab seats four adults in comfort. A front trunk, underseat storage, a gear tunnel between the cab and the 4.5-foot bed optimize the space in the way of smart camping gear.
Rivian packages each R1T with a suite of driver-assist technology that usually costs extra on luxury vehicles, such as a standard surround-view camera system and adaptive cruise control. The IIHS bestowed its highest safety honor on the R1T with a Top Safety Pick+.
How much does the 2025 Rivian R1T cost?
Three battery pack sizes and three motor configurations decide the price. The 2025 Rivian R1T Dual Standard costs $71,700, including an $1,800 destination charge. The Dual Large battery pack costs $7,000 more than the Dual Standard, but it’s the only R1T to qualify for a $3,750 tax credit. Upgrading to the Dual Max adds $7,000 more, bringing the total to $85,700.
Every R1T comes with a 15.6-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch instrument cluster that take over all traditional controls. It also has 8-way power front seats that are heated and cooled, a heated steering wheel, front tow hooks, a Meridian sound system, an on-board air compressor, and a power tailgate. We recommend adding the 22-inch aero wheels for $2,000 and a modest range boost, and we also like the $5,000 Performance upgrade.
The R1T Tri costs $101,700, and the Quad will run even more.
Where is the 2025 Rivian R1T made?
The R1T and R1S three-row SUV are made in Normal, Illinois.
